ZomBcon 2011 – The Horde Returns to Seattle in October

[January 12th, 2011] – The horde has spoken for Zombie fans everywhere, as Seattle will continue to be the Zombie capital of the world again in 2011!

ZomBcon International is proud to announce the return of their popular convention this fall hosted in the Emerald City (Seattle) starting on Friday, October 21st – 23rd, 2011 for the second annual convention.

ZomBcon debuted to an overwhelming response by fans taking center stage last year over Halloween weekend with some of the biggest names in the culture.

With impressive explosion of fanboy appeal from an Evil Dead Wedding with Bruce Campbell to the 25th Anniversary of Romero’s DAY OF THE DEAD with the Romero and cast. In it’s first year, it joined the ranks as a premier con in an impressive list of northwest fan conventions like Emerald City Comic Con, Steamcon, Crypticon and Norwescon. ZomBcon aimed to celebrate the evolution of the horror genre and icon, the Zombie.

Ryan Reiter, Artistic Director and founder of the popular ZomBcon and the annual Red, White and Dead Zombie Walk says “I grew up in Seattle, I love Seattle and I built this for Seattle, so we plan to keep it in Seattle for 2011.” He attributes it to the overwhelming support of fans through Facebook an email, who won us over in our decision. Reiter reminds us by saying “that’s who matters most, Zombcon evolved as a convention that zombie fans built out of our annual zombie walk. They who made this city the Zombie capital of the world and we think they deserve it for 2011.”

2010 was a huge big year for the undead in Seattle, from reclaiming the Guinness World Record Zombie Walk from Britain, it very own Zombie Research Society Chapter and now being the birth place of the world’s first-ever Zombie culture convention known as ZomBcon International.

Seattle has  been a hot bed for talented artists living here; creating the next wave of popular culture from independent movies, literature, video games to literature. “We want to support that and remind the world what’s happening here 365″ mentions Reiter. Seattle has long been known for being a mecca of independent music, software giants, and it’s love of coffee, in 2009 it became known for infectious fan culture with thousands of the the walking dead breaking a world record for the largest gathering of Zombies every summer in 2009 and 2010.

So what does the future hold for ZomBcon International? Reiter has announced that ZomBcon International will move to a new city in 2012 with talks of San Francisco, Austin, Chicago and even across the water in Europe and Asia in the near future.

Ultimately, Reiter knows some fans may be disappointed by the choice, but always loved built this convention to travel in the year’s to come, offering Zombie fans from all over to be able to connect and experience the convention.

Every year, it offers a new adventure and concentrated “outbreaks” of fan culture throughout the United States offer fans to travel and make new friends and explore new cities. Reiter further says “The convention never loses it’s momentum and energy, it’s always growing and finding a new audience, it’s an infection of fan culture, a pilgrimage, it’s your ticket to the apocalypse.”

He also adds “Many fans I spoke to by email or on Facebook, were bummed it was too far away, some just cant afford the expense to make it to Seattle, as it can be a huge investment for the average attendee these days, money is tigt for everybody.

Reiter may win and lose fans, given that most comic conventions remain in their host city year after year. Will Reiter’s vision be a gamble or chartering new ground? Reiter remains confident that his team will continue to deliver what the fans want most and never lose sight of its responsibility to the culture, 2010 was a great example of their commitment so far.

One of the oldest fan conventions, WORLDCON starting in 1939 during the World War 2 has managed to evolve and offers cities bid for their convention each year and it’s been widely successful in allowing fans to travel when it meets their budget.

So what will ZomBcon offer in the way of programing and guests list for 2011? Hold tight for their February program announcement for three major headliner guests for 2011. If 2010 was just a taste of what was possible, we look forward to 2011 with new projects from Brooks’ World War, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies in production, along with the return of The Walking Dead, anything is possible for ZomBcon.

The rise in video game culture and the world of make-up, special effects and costumes in the genre will will be more featured in 2011. Reiter is also interested in expanding the focus and offering new guests that are fans of the Zombie culture, embracing the edges of the horror genre. One of the surprise hits in 2010, the Zombie Research Society will also return for new panels and guests in 2011, including local experts, so that’s

“You don’t have to have made a Zombie movie, comic or book to be a guest here, but you do need to have a vested interest in the culture and have something to offer,” says Reiter. Malcolm McDowell and Chuck Palahniuk, both guests in 2010 are great examples of the guests that can attend to offer their ideas and perspective on why America loves the Zombie these days, so expect the unexpected for the guest list with a few staples you know and love.

Many of the guests you will not see on the circuit and may never see again, so plan on getting your tickets booked for ZomBcon International 2011 – Seattle.

Full Details on venue, tickets, and vendor booths go live on Tuesday, January 18th, 2011 at 12pm PST. 2011 Passes and booths go on sale on Tuesday, January 18th for residents of Seattle in limited quantities, that include a limited edition t-shirt and more.
